Cottonwood Campground

Cottonwood Campground is a relaxing shady area near the Rio Grande on the west side of Big Bend National Park. It has a reputation among birders, and for good reason. The birds were very active the morning we visited and it was an exciting experience. We heard a Grey hawk vocalize several times and followed it as it flew from tree to tree. Wilson's warblers and Black-throated sparrows were also quite abundant.

  1. Wow, I think that Gray Hawk photo is the best photo of the trip. I'm so glad you got it!

  3. ...would love to see those birds! The Gray Hawk is beautiful...and the Black-throated Sparrow as well--both would be life birds for me. I love the pose you capture of the Wilson's.

  5. Jeff and Kelly -- Thanks for stopping by and for your comments! These were both life birds for me, so that made seeing and photographing them even more special. And yes, that week off work was bliss. :)
